Book Clubs in Mumbai

The Bring Your Own Book (BYOB) chapter of Mumbai is a popular book lovers club in Mumbai that offers a unique experience. Although BYOB is a nationwide network, its Mumbai branch is the busiest. Usually, people congregate in parks, cafes, or their houses. Thanks to the members who lend out their books, they also have a small library on their website.

If you need to borrow a book, just get in touch with the administrators, and they’ll be happy to assist you. Even so, you are able to lend other members a few books. It costs nothing to join or borrow books. A virtual library and a book club? This is the realisation of the dream for all bookworms.

Caferati, The Writer’s Forum

Do you want feedback on your writing? Use of Caferati is recommended. Writers, all you have to do is jump on over to their Facebook page and post your pieces there. Group members can then evaluate your work and provide feedback.

Although it’s not quite like a book club, caferati is, as its name suggests, a place where writers can interact, talk about their work, and get feedback from other writers as well as readers.

This unique venue apparently does open mics at the Prithvi Theatre on the fourth Monday of every month in addition to hosting “read meets” once a month. At the open mic, you can choose to read your written work aloud or in pairs.

Broke Bibliophiles

Book hoarders in Mumbai are welcome to join our group. They are conceivably among the busiest offline and internet companies in Mumbai. They host several events where you may discuss writers, trade books, evaluate prose or poetry, etc.

They often have events, generally on Sundays, where people can come and read aloud from books, engage in deep discussions about them, and, of course, meet new people who are as passionate about books as we are. They also provide additional stuff, including educational pieces, on their Facebook page.

Loquations

It’s not every day that a sixteen-year-old girl founds and leads a popular literary organisation. This club was started in 2012 by Dhirubhai Ambani International School student Anvita Budhraja, coinciding with the 237th birthday celebration of the world famous author Jane Austen.

The first major event that the organisation held was on December 16, 2012. This group not only connects readers through a book club, but it has also reached out to colleges in Mumbai and organised a creative writing competition.

The challenge for competitors was to recreate any famous Jane Austen scene, but with a modern twist for the twenty-first century. In addition, the club organises a lot of similar literary events, tournaments, seminars, and get-togethers in Mumbai.

The Pen

The International Association of Poets, Playwrights, Editors, Essayists & Novelists, or PEN, is one of the most illustrious and established literary societies worldwide. Mumbai is home to its Indian chapter. The club meets once a month, but also does a tonne of literary events and courses.

One can choose to be a full or associate member of the PEN; full membership has no requirements for associate membership and requires at least two published works. The organisation meets once a month at Mumbai’s Theosophy Hall. Currently, there are three circles within the PEN: those for writers, publishers, and readers.

We find it exciting to exchange books with other book enthusiasts in the city because it is such a great and pure idea. Those who want to get together to share books and schedule reading sessions with one another can join this group, which was formed in 2012 but isn’t as active as it previously was.

These days, we may go out and socialise with new people, have literary discussions, check out and borrow books, and much more. Their members are welcome to attend readings, coffee gatherings, presentations, and other activities on their schedule.
